Description:
Orthovisc is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution of highly purified sodium hyaluronate, used for intra-articular injection. Each syringe contains 2 ml of solution with a concentration of 15 mg/ml of sodium hyaluronate, derived from a fermentation source. Orthovisc is designed to relieve pain and improve joint mobility in patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee.
Indications:
Orthovisc is indicated for the treatment of pain in osteoarthritis of the knee in patients who have not responded adequately to conservative non-pharmacologic therapy and simple analgesics (e.g., acetaminophen). It is used to provide temporary relief of joint pain and to improve mobility by supplementing the viscous properties of synovial fluid in the knee joint.
Dosage and Administration:
Orthovisc is administered via intra-articular injection by a healthcare professional. The typical treatment regimen consists of a series of three or four injections, given at weekly intervals. Each injection involves the administration of 2 ml (30 mg) of Orthovisc directly into the affected knee joint. The exact number of injections and frequency will be determined by the treating physician based on the patient’s condition and response to therapy.
Possible Side Effects:
Common side effects associated with Orthovisc may include:
- Injection Site Reactions: Pain, swelling, heat, redness, or fluid buildup around the injection site.
- Joint Pain: Temporary increase in joint pain following the injection.
- Stiffness: Stiffness in the knee joint.
- Bruising: Minor bruising at the injection site.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Allergic Reactions: Patients with known hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate or any of the components in Orthovisc should not use this product.
- Infection: Orthovisc should not be injected into joints with infections or skin diseases in the area of the injection site.
- Aseptic Technique: The injection must be performed under strict aseptic conditions to avoid infections.
- Pain Management: Patients may experience increased pain and swelling immediately after the injection. Applying ice to the affected area and resting the joint may help alleviate symptoms.
Storage:
Orthovisc should be stored at a temperature between 2°C and 25°C (36°F and 77°F). It should be protected from light and should not be frozen. Keep Orthovisc out of reach of children and pets.
Orthovisc, manufactured by Takeda, is a prescription medical device used for the management of osteoarthritis knee pain. It provides temporary relief by enhancing the lubricating properties of synovial fluid, thus improving joint function and reducing discomfort. Patients should follow their healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the administration and monitoring of Orthovisc therapy. Any concerns or side effects should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
