Olumiant (baricitinib) is a prescription medication used to treat:
- Moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults who have responded inadequately to, or who are intolerant to one or more disease modifying anti rheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
- Alopecia areata (AA) in adults with severe AA who are not candidates for other systemic therapies.
- COVID-19 in hospitalized adults requiring supplemental oxygen, non-invasive or invasive mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
Olumiant is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor. JAKs are enzymes that play a role in the inflammation and immune response. By blocking JAKs, Olumiant can help to reduce inflammation and improve symptoms of RA, AA, and COVID-19.
How to Use
Olumiant is taken orally once a day. The recommended dose for RA is 2 mg or 4 mg. The recommended dose for AA is 4 mg. The recommended dose for COVID-19 is 4 mg.
Important Safety Information
Olumiant can increase the risk of serious infections, including tuberculosis (TB), shingles, and others caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses. Before starting Olumiant, your doctor will test you for TB. Olumiant can also reactivate latent TB infection.
Olumiant can also increase the risk of other side effects, such as:
- Allergic reactions
- Blood clots
- Cancer
- High cholesterol
- High liver enzymes
- Low blood counts
- Lymphoma
- Serious heart problems
- Stomach problems
- Stroke
Indications
Olumiant is indicated for the treatment of:
- Moderately to severely active RA in adults who have responded inadequately to, or who are intolerant to one or more DMARDs.
- Severe AA in adults who are not candidates for other systemic therapies.
- COVID-19 in hospitalized adults requiring supplemental oxygen, non-invasive or invasive mechanical ventilation, or ECMO.
Precautions
Olumiant should be used with caution in patients with a history of serious infections, TB, blood clots, cancer, high cholesterol, high liver enzymes, low blood counts, lymphoma, heart problems, or stomach problems.
Olumiant should not be used in patients who have a history of severe allergic reactions to Olumiant or other JAK inhibitors.
Interactions
Olumiant may interact with other medications, including live vaccines and other biologic medications. Be sure to tell your doctor about all of the medications you are taking before starting Olumiant.
Contraindications
Olumiant is contraindicated in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to Olumiant or other JAK inhibitors.
Overdose
There is no known overdose of Olumiant.
Side Effects
The most common side effects of Olumiant are upper respiratory tract infections, headache, diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, and injection site reactions.
More serious side effects of Olumiant include serious infections, blood clots, cancer, high cholesterol, high liver enzymes, low blood counts, lymphoma, heart problems, stomach problems, and stroke.
