Takhzyro (lanadelumab) is a prescription medication used to prevent attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in people 2 years of age and older. HAE is a rare genetic disorder that causes episodes of swelling in the skin, throat, abdomen, and other parts of the body. These attacks can be life-threatening if they affect the airway.

Takhzyro is a monoclonal antibody that works by blocking the activity of plasma kallikrein, a protein that plays a key role in the development of HAE attacks.

Uses

Takhzyro is used to prevent attacks of HAE in people 2 years of age and older. It is not known if Takhzyro is safe and effective in children under 2 years of age.

Storage Conditions

Takhzyro should be stored in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze. Takhzyro can be kept at room temperature for up to 24 hours.

Mechanism of Action

Takhzyro is a monoclonal antibody that binds to plasma kallikrein and blocks its activity. Plasma kallikrein is a protein that plays a key role in the development of HAE attacks. By blocking the activity of plasma kallikrein, Takhzyro can help to prevent HAE attacks from occurring.

How to Use

Takhzyro is administered by subcutaneous injection every 2 weeks. The recommended dose is 300 mg. Takhzyro can be self-administered or administered by a caregiver.

Important Safety Information

Takhzyro can increase the risk of serious infections, including tuberculosis. Before starting Takhzyro, your doctor will test you for tuberculosis. Takhzyro can also reactivate latent tuberculosis infection.

Takhzyro can also increase the risk of other side effects, such as:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Injection site reactions
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

Indications

Takhzyro is indicated for the routine prevention of recurrent attacks of HAE in patients 2 years of age and older.

Precautions

Takhzyro should be used with caution in patients with a history of serious infections, tuberculosis, or other autoimmune diseases.

Takhzyro should not be used in patients who have a history of severe allergic reactions to Takhzyro or other biologic medications.

Interactions

Takhzyro may interact with other medications, including live vaccines and biologic medications. Be sure to tell your doctor about all of the medications you are taking before starting Takhzyro.

Contraindications

Takhzyro is contraindicated in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to Takhzyro or other biologic medications.

Overdose

There is no known overdose of Takhzyro.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Takhzyro are injection site reactions, upper respiratory tract infections, headache, rash, diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue.

More serious side effects of Takhzyro include serious infections and allergic reactions.
